Hannah Deen cleared 5-5 in the Region I-4A girls high jump to earn the second trip to the state track meet of her high school career

LUBBOCK – The first berth to the UIL Class 4A track and state championships was secured by Brownwood High School Friday at Lowrey Field, as Hannah Deen captured the Region I girls championship in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.

Deen, a junior, will be making her second appearance at state in the high jump as she also qualified as a freshman as the regional runner-up. Deen, who suffered through a quad injury throughout much of her sophomore campaign, cleared 5-5 Friday on the last of three attempts to top second-place Anna Green of Bridgeport and third-place Tenera Gray of Canyon Randall, who both cleared 5-4.

Also Friday, Sidney Windham came in fourth in the girls 3200 meters with a time of 11:49.42 and Lyndi Biasiolli was 11th at 12:58.73. Meanwhile, Nylah Hall placed sixth in the girls triple jump with a best effort of 36-7.5. Icess Hall came in ninth with a 35-8.5 and Deen finished 11th with a 35-7.25 in the triple jump as well.

Upcoming in Saturday field events, the Lady Lions will be competing in the long jump with Hannah Deen and Kaya Phillips, along with the pole vault with Grace Sparks.

Through three events Friday in which the Lady Lions participated, the Brownwood girls have amassed 15 points, which leaves them in third place, one point behind runner-up Monahans (16) and nine points off the pace of meet leader Canyon Randall (24), heading into Saturday action.

In the running preliminaries Friday, both the Lady Lions 4×100 and 4×200 relays broke their school records and advanced to Saturday’s finals with first-place finishes. The 4×100 relay of Icess Hall, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin and Aniah Hines was clocked at 47.31, while the 4×200 relay of Jade Morin, Kaya Phillips, Aniah Hines and Kate Tindol ran a 1:40.16.

Also advancing to Saturday’s running finals for the Lady Lions were Kaya Phillips in the 200 meters with a first-place time of 24.34; the 4×400 relay of Kate Tindol, Jade Morin, Rebekkah Delgado and Braycee Lee in a second-place time of 3:59.35; Kate Tindol in the 300-meter hurdles with a second-place time of 45.06; Jentry Coalson in the 100-meter hurdles with a seventh-place time of 15.77; and Icess Hall in the 100-meter hurdles with an eighth-place time of 12.79.

For the Brownwood Lions, Aaron Edmonds is set to compete in the boys long jump Saturday.

Also, based on Friday’s running preliminaries, hitting the track for the Lions Saturday will be Trae Jones in the 110-meter hurdles, as he finished second in a time of 14.75; and the 4×100 relay of Trae Jones, Trent Buffington, Raven Prado and Aaron Edmonds, which placed seventh in a time of 42.52;

The top two finishers in each event at regionals will move on the UIL Class 4A track and field state championships Thursday, May 1 at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium in Austin.
