Brownwood head football coach Jeryl Brixey announced Wednesday that the Lions will be competing in three 7-on-7 state qualifying tournaments beginning in May.
The Lions are set to host their own 16-team, Division II state qualifier on Saturday, May 31, as two teams from the field will advance to the state championship tournament at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station June 26-27.
Brixey also stated the Lions will compete in the 16-team Mineral Wells tournament on Saturday, May 24, as well as the 16-team Big Country tournament, hosted by Jim Ned, on Saturday, June 7.
The Lions will again be hosting a 7-on-7 league on Mondays during the month of May at Brownwood High School.
Among the 7-on-7 goals for Brixey and the Lions, who are installing a new offense that features much more of a play-action passing game, he said, “It’s probably more important for us as this point than it’s going to be down the road. It’s going to be a teaching time for something that’s not a huge part of our offense, the drop back passing game. It gives us a chance to work on that and really get our schemes down. In future years, I don’t think it will be that important, but right now it will be time well spent.”
Brixey stated a varsity, JV and freshman unit will be competing during Monday night league games.
“Varsity and JV will be a loose interpretation,” Brixey said. “There’s going to be a lot of movement, but this is a starting point.”
