Vernon Harold Hicks went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Vernon’s Pastor, Artie Woodcox of Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate a graveside service for Vernon at Cross Plains Cemetery on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 2:00PM. Arrangements are under the direction Heartland Funeral Home in Early.

Vernon Harold Hicks was born on July 1, 1930, in Utopia, Texas, one of seven children born to Junius Allen “J.A.” Hicks and Sara Ruth (Jenkins) Hicks. Vernon was the son of a rancher who assisted with raising the family’s sheep and goats on their 1800-acre ranch. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting deer and turkeys. Vernon attended Utopia public schools and worked after school in a local auto repair shop that taught him the trade. After he graduated in 1947, he ventured into West Texas to work as an oilfield mechanic.

In Odessa, Vernon met and married the love of his life, Lola Francene McGuire, whom he married in 1950. In 1953, to provide a robust income for his new family, Vernon attended Heath Night School in Odessa, TX, where he learned the fast-growing radio and TV repair fields. The couple moved to Boerne, TX, in 1954, where they opened a radio and TV repair shop. In 1965, Vernon accepted a position at Boerne High School, teaching automotive technology. After two decades, he retired, and the couple moved to Brownwood. After retiring, Vernon enjoyed working on old clocks at Hicks Clock Shop on S. Broadway Street and making dulcimers from exotic woods.

Vernon and Lola had a loving relationship and were married 71 years before Lola preceded him in death on March 2, 2022. Their union bore three sons who live on to remember and honor him following his passing: Vernon Harold Hicks, Jr. and wife Tatiana of Brownwood, Roger Dale Hicks of Early, and Paul Douglas Hicks of Brownwood. Five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and loving friends survive him.

Vernon’s parents, J.A. and Sara; his wife of 71 years, Lola; his five brothers, William Douglas Hicks, Fabian Allen Hicks, Charles Gilbert Hicks, James Alvin Hicks, and Bruce Allen Hicks; and his sister, Shirley (Hicks) Wantzloeben, preceded him in death.
