It is with heavy hearts and eternal joy that we announce the passing of Donald J. Roath, age 85, on April 7, 2025. A devoted man of God, a husband of 68 years, a father of six, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, Don’s life was a shining example of faith, love, and servant-hearted leadership.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Joan Auxier Roath, his lifelong partner whom he met in El Paso, Texas—where she fell in love with a handsome drum major who would become her forever love.
He is also survived by his children: Steve Roath and wife Gayle, Donna DuPont and husband Fred, Gina Patterson, Ralph Roath and wife Lisa, Marcy Ross, and Mark Roath and wife Christine; along with 19 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy of faith and family.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, HC Roath and Norma Stone, his sister Jan Ware, sons-in-law Ray Patterson and Dale Ross, and his beloved grandson’s, Christopher Bell and Zachary Tulcus.
Born on May 1, 1939, and raised in El Paso, Texas, Don began serving the Lord at a young age—and he never stopped. His early ministry work included leading music, youth, and discipleship programs in churches across Texas, from El Paso to Sherman. He was an innovator and trailblazer, creating opportunities for people to encounter Christ through music, art, and outreach—from bus ministries to Living Christmas Trees and dynamic musicals.
Later in life, God called Don to preach the Gospel himself. He answered that call by attending SMU Seminary Masters Program and was ordained as a Methodist pastor, going on to lead several churches in Central Texas. Even in retirement, Don continued to serve his community and churches with unwavering commitment, encouragement, and love.
Don touched countless lives over the years—and many for eternity. His ministry was more than a calling; it was the very fabric of his life.
As a family man, Don will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, his uncanny ability to win almost every card game, his tender love, fierce protection of Betty, and his grace-filled presence. He was a man who gave his heart freely, served others selflessly, and lived with purpose and passion. His dedication to the Lord was evident in every word, every note sung, and every life he reached.
Today, we celebrate a life lived fully for God and rejoice that Don is now experiencing the eternal fruits of his labor and calling.
A celebration of Don’s life and legacy will be held on Friday April 11, 2025, from 1-2pm at the Acton Baptist Church, with a service to follow. A graveside service will be held on Saturday April 12, 2025, starting at 11am, at the Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, Tx. All are welcome to join the family in honoring a man whose life so powerfully reflected the love of Christ.
