The Heart of Texas Baptist Camp and Retreat shared the following information:

For nearly eight decades, the Emzy Brown Tabernacle has stood as a beacon of faith, fellowship, and community. Nestled on the shores of Lake Brownwood, this historic structure has witnessed countless worship services, heartfelt prayers, and life-changing moments since its construction in 1948. Today, we embark on an extraordinary journey to restore and revitalize this beloved landmark, ensuring it continues to serve future generations.

A Legacy of Faith and Fellowship

The story of the tabernacle began in 1946 when the District 16 Brotherhood acquired 26.21 acres of land for a mere $6,890. Just two years later, the vision of a sturdy, enduring place of worship became a reality. Designed and built by camp board member Emzy Brown of Santa Anna, the 60’x100’ tabernacle—crafted from native rock, concrete, and steel—stood strong, accommodating up to 1,000 worshippers.

For nearly 50 years, the tabernacle served as the heart of the camp, hosting vibrant worship services and camp meetings. Its iconic bell tower, added by the Downtown Bible Class in Brownwood, called people to gather in faith. In 1952, a concrete floor was laid, and in 1987, a steeple was added, further solidifying its place as a cherished spiritual landmark.

A New Purpose, A Renewed Vision

As the camp evolved, so did the needs of its visitors. By 1996, worship services transitioned to the indoor Hammons Auditorium, and the tabernacle took on a new role. In 2003, the stage area was enclosed and transformed into “The Oasis,” the camp’s concession stand. The open pavilion area became a versatile gathering space, welcoming picnics, group activities, and moments of quiet reflection.

Yet, the essence of the tabernacle remained. Generations of campers, families, and retreat-goers continued to feel its deep spiritual significance. Recognizing this, in 2025, the board of directors have made a bold and exciting decision—to restore the tabernacle as an enclosed indoor space, breathing new life into its original purpose.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

The restoration of the Emzy Brown Tabernacle is more than a renovation; it is a tribute to the countless lives touched within its walls. The vision for this space is both practical and inspiring. With glass walls that embrace the natural beauty of the surrounding trees, lake, and sunsets, the restored tabernacle will continue to serve as a sacred gathering place. It will remain home to the summer concession stand while providing a welcoming environment for worship, retreats, and fellowship. The space will also be a welcome relief from the Texas heat during the afternoons of summer camp. The project has already begun and will be finished before the first campers arrive in less than 3 months.

This project is a labor of love, a commitment to preserving history while making room for future generations to experience the same sense of belonging and spiritual renewal. But we can’t do it alone.
