Brownwood baseball blanks Lake View, falls to Jim Ned at Sweetwater tournament

Austin Pittman and the Lions (4-2) will face Wall at 10 a.m. Friday and meet Merkel at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in Merkel.

SWEETWATER – The Brownwood Lions split their first two games at the Sweetwater baseball tournament Thursday, blanking San Angelo Lake View for the second time this season before being upended by Jim Ned.

In the first game Thursday, the Lions cruised past Lake View by an 11-0 count.

Brownwood opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and tacked on four more runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.

On the mound, the Lions posted their fourth shutout as Jack Field and Daylyn Ansons allowed just two hits with four strikeouts and four walks over five innings. Defensively, Brownwood did not commit an error and turned three double plays.

The Lions tallied eight hits at the plate – a pair and three RBIs by Austin Wright; two and two RBIs by Robbie Robinson; two and one RBI by Field; and one hit each by Austin Pittman and Antonio Ybarra. Evan Escobar walked once and contributed two RBIs, while Ybarra also drew a free pass and Wyatt Wolf walked twice.

Brownwood faced Jim Ned next in the second half of a doubleheader and dropped a 9-1 decision.

The Lions knotted the score at 1 in the top of the second inning, but Jim Ned struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth.

Brownwood was limited to a pair of hits, one by Field and one by Escobar, who also drew a walk along with Noah Gonzalez.

On the mound, Pittman and Wright combined to surrendered nine earned runs on a dozen hits with five strikeouts and four walks. The Lion defense committed one error.

The Lions (4-2) will face Wall at 10 a.m. Friday and meet Merkel at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in Merkel.
