MINERAL WELLS – The Brownwood Lions secured their first District 6-4A victory of the season, snapping a 12-game losing streak in the process, with a 79-63 road triumph over the Mineral Wells Rams Friday night.

The Lions (14-18, 1-8) avenged a 62-51 home loss to Mineral Wells (5-26, 1-8) back on Jan. 21 and earned their first district victory since since Feb. 4, 2023 – a span of 18 league contests.

“I’m really happy for the seniors and all the guys, they’ve been working for so long, I’m really proud of the effort,” said Lions head coach Will Parker. “It was awesome to see the guys come together and play a full game, and that’s something we talked about at halftime.”

Casey Friebel led the charge offensively with 36 points for the Lions, with 19 coming in the first half, trailed by 18 from Weston Wolf, who did all his scoring in the first two quarters. Ross Strasner and Durham Brown each chipped in eight points, Elias Perez finished with five and Bennett Windham contributed four points.

Mineral Wells was paced by the 24-point night of Charlie Ramsay.

The Lions led throughout the contest as they turned an 18-17 edge after one period into a 44-26 advantage by halftime. The lead peaked early in the third period at 21 points, 47-36, before Mineral Wells eventually trimmed the deficit to eight, 68-60, with just under two minutes left in the contest. Brownwood, however, finished the game with an 11-3 run.

“It’s always a tough environment over here,” Parker said. “They went on a little run but I thought we handled it pretty well. I thought defensive rebounding was going to win the game, especially down the stretch. That was vital for us, along with making some free throws.”

Brownwood will wrap up its season at 7 p.m. Tuesday as its welcomes Glen Rose.
