Armonie Ramey totaled 32 points and Hudson Johnson added 27 and the Howard Payne men’s basketball team took down the Concordia (TX) Tornados 113-101 at home Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets (8-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Ramey, who notched a double-double with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson added 27 points and three steals and Riley Fornerette chipped in as well with 12 points and six rebounds.

The Howard Payne offense was very productive from three point land, knocking down 11 threes on 30 attempts. Ramey was the most prolific shooter for the Yellow Jackets, draining three treys in the contest.

The Howard Payne defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday’s game, forcing 20 Concordia (TX) turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ramey’s six steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.

How It Happened

After playing to a 36-36 tie, Howard Payne went on a 9-0 run with 4:56 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Mason McGowen, to take a 45-36 lead. The Yellow Jackets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 53-50 advantage. Howard Payne relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 53 points.

Following intermission, Howard Payne kept widening that lead, expanding it to 101-95 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Ramey’s layup, to grow the lead to 110-95 with 2:28 to go in the contest. The Tornados narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yellow Jackets still cruised the rest of the way for the 113-101 win. Howard Payne took care of business in the paint, recording 30 of its 60 points in the lane.
