James Lewis ‘Larry’ Johnson

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; That where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14;1-3.

James Lewis “Larry” Johnson, 64 of Brownwood, Texas, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2024 in Brownwood,TX. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 20, 2024 at Brownwood Funeral Home at 1:00 pm.

Larry was born January 19, 1960 in Hopkins, South Carolina to Esther Rumph and was raised by grandparents Hubert and Ethel Johnson. He received his primary education in the public schools of Richland County, South Carolina and after graduating from Lower Richland High School, moved on to Culinary Arts School becoming an amazing Chef.

Larry married Nancy Johnson April, 28, 2012 in Brownwood, TX and shared 25 great years together. He desired to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, so he joined Lee Chapel AME Church in Brownwood where he attended church faithfully and served in many capacities. During his time in Brownwood, Larry was a faithful employee of the Brownwood State School now known as Ron Jackson State School and Dairymaid which later became Dairy Queen and retired after 24 years of employment.

Larry is preceded in death by his beloved mother Ester Rumph and grandparents Hurbert and Ethel Johnson.

Left to cherish his memories is wife Nancy Johnson; Sons: Terry Vickers, Larry Johnson and Derrick Johnson; daughter: Nykisha “Cookie” Council; stepchildren: Arthur Brooks, Mercedes Brooks, Joel Brooks, Jason Brooks, Antinisha Brooks and James Anderson; sisters: Torrie Rumph and Geraldine Watts; brothers: Askie Rumph and Michael Kelly; aunt: Martha A. Hunter; uncle: Raymond (Josephine).

Larry loved his grandchildren and loved to show them and to the world how much he did. Left with so many great memories of PAPA are Chelei Brooks, Decovan Brooks, Madison Brooks, Draiden Brooks, Keedan Brooks, Truth Brooks, Wisdom Allen and Serenity Allen along with tons of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
