Lady Lions knock off Alvarado, 49-37, to earn second-day split at Lorena tournament

Trinity Roberts (11) scored 10 points for Brownwood (9-5), which will face either Jarrell or Robinson for the silver bracket championship at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

LORENA – The Brownwood Lady Lions posted a 1-1 record at the Lorena basketball tournament Friday to earn a spot in the silver bracket championship game.

Brownwood concluded Friday competition with a 49-37 victory over Alvarado as the Lady Lions led 14-7 after one quarter, 31-17 at halftime, and 41-25 heading into the fourth period.

The Lady Lions converted 35 percent (20 of 56) of their field goals, but only 3 of 16 three-pointers, and also sank 66 percent (6 of 9) of their free throws. Brownwood pulled down 34 rebounds, and 14 on the offensive end, and committed just 12 turnovers with 11 steals.

Trinity Roberts scored a team-best 10 points for Brownwood followed by nine from Jade Morin, eight from Hannah Deen, seven from Nylah Hall, six from Icess Hall, four from Cassidy Brown, two each from Kate Tindol and Miranda Northcutt, and one point from Lanie Johnson.

Brownwood started the day by crossing paths with a former consistent postseason rival in Kennedale and dropped a 55-48 decision.

The Lady Lions trailed Kennedale by an 11-10 count after the first period, 25-17 at halftime, and 40-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Icess Hall scored a team-high 18 points for the Lady Lions trailed by 13 from Deen, six each from Morin and Nylah Hall, three from Johnson, and two points from Tindol.

The Lady Lions converted 31 percent (16 of 51) of their shots, including 4 of 31 three-pointers, and drained 63 percent (12 of 19) of their free throws. Brownwood was plagued by 22 turnovers, but recorded 13 steals and 25 rebounds, with 14 coming on the offensive end.

The tournament began Thursday for the Lady Lions with a 66-46 victory over Belton.

Brownwood (9-5) will face either Jarrell or Robinson for the silver bracket championship at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
