Grapeland 39, Goldthwaite 29

WACO – The Goldthwaite Eagles’ 2024 football campaign reached its conclusion in the Class 2A Division II Region III area round of the playoffs with a 39-29 loss to the Grapeland Sandies Friday night.

Goldthwaite (7-5) trailed Grapeland (9-3) by a 12-0 count after one quarter and 31-7 at halftime before a spirited rally over the final two periods.

The Eagles finished with 339 yards – 178 rushing and 161 passing – with two turnovers while the Sandies churned out 335 yards – 180 through the air and 155 on the ground – with three giveaways.

Luke Sanderson rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns for Goldthwaite and caught a team-high five passes for 57 yards. Aidyn Lee completed 13 of 20 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Landry Sanderson added 57 yards on the ground, while Casen Wiedebusch grabbed five passes for 44 yards and Zach Rodriguez nabbed two receptions for 44 yards with a touchdown.

Axtell 45, Coleman 6

WEATHERFORD – The Coleman Bluecats’ four-game win streak and season came to an end with a 45-6 loss to the Axtell Longhorns Friday night in Class 2A Division I Region II area playoff action.

Coleman (4-8) was limited to 198 total yards – 124 passing and 74 rushing – by Axtell (11-1), which also forced three Bluecat turnovers. Meanwhile, the Bluecats defense yielded 465 yards – 440 on the ground and 53 through the air – with only one takeaway.

Hunter Edington completed 11 of 29 passes for Coleman for 124 yards with one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Kelan Sikes caught the 32-yard touchdown and finished with two grabs for 39 yards.

Anthony Espitia recorded a team-high five receptions for 44 yards, while Paul Salas rushed for a team-best 43 yards and hauled in a 44-yard reception. Blaine Bouldin added 23 yards on the ground and caught a 33-yard pass as well.
