Jackets notch first home win in 115-103 shootout with McMurry

Trey Jackson scored 26 points and Armonie Ramey added 24 and the Howard Payne men’s basketball team took down the McMurry War Hawks 115-103 at home Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets (2-3) had six players score in double figures, led by Jackson, who had 26 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Ramey added a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Mario Perry helped out with 16 points off of the bench.

Howard Payne out-rebounded McMurry 41-32 in Tuesday’s game, paced by Ramey’s 10 boards.

The Howard Payne defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday’s game, forcing 15 McMurry turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Riley Fornerette’s four steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 27-20 advantage, Howard Payne went on a 13-0 run with 10:56 left in the first half to increase its lead to 40-20. The Yellow Jackets then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 66-45 advantage. Howard Payne got out and ran in the period, scoring 15 points on the break.

Howard Payne kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 105-92 with 4:34 to go in the contest. The War Hawks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yellow Jackets still cruised the rest of the way for the 115-103 win. Howard Payne took care of business in the paint, recording 30 of its 49 points in the lane.

The Yellow Jackets will Travel to Houston, Texas to face Dillard University on November the 22nd. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
