Helen Claire Harkey, a devoted family member and a friend to all, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024 at 83 years old. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 24th, at the First Presbyterian Church of San Saba, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM, officiated by Pastor John Alsbrooks.

Helen was born in Brownwood, Texas on May 23, 1941 and was a lifelong resident of San Saba. Helen lived her mission of celebrating her community’s joys, birthdays, anniversaries and holidays by writing cards to her vast group of loved ones and family.  She enjoyed riding her bike, exercising, and made every person she met feel cherished.

She is survived by her brother, Don Harkey & his wife, Beverly Childress Harkey of Austin; Hannah Harkey and Ben Bertram of Austin; Ky Harkey and Alice Woods of Austin; Kelsey Harkey and Quinton Craner of Chattanooga; ZiZi of Austin; Marsha Childress of San Saba; and Randy and Suzi Harkey of Brownwood and many more beloved cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Ruby Harkey; her paternal grandparents of San Saba, Otis and Mabel Harkey; and maternal grandparents Harry & Docia Wilson of Brookston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or a charity of your choice. We would like to thank all of those who stepped up to help care for Helen and help her be as independent as possible through the years. You all made such a difference in her life. We cannot praise the nurses and staff of San Saba Rehabilitation and Nursing Home enough for their constant, professional and heartfelt care. They made Helen feel so loved and cared for.
