SUBVARSITY FOOTBALL REPORT: Freshman Lions remain unbeaten with 43-7 win at Burnet

Freshman Lions 43, Burnet 7

BURNET – The Brownwood Freshman Lions kept their flawless record intact with a 43-7 road victory over Burnet Thursday.

The Freshman Lions are now 8-0 on the season and have outscored their opponents, 304-44.

Brownwood led 7-0 after one quarter on a 54-yard run by quarterback Caden Wilson and Aiden Jimenez’s extra point.

The Lions stretched the lead to 30-0 by halftime as Wilson added scoring sprints of 11 and 19 yards, while Trent Buffington also scored on a 6-yard carry. Jimenez booted a 30-yard field goal as well prior to intermission.

In the third quarter, Wilson connected with Garrett Wilkerson on a 19-yard touchdown pass as Jimenez added the PAT.

Brownwood’s final touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard toss from Wilkerson to Blayne Stegemoller.

Burnet avoided the shutout in the waning moments of the contest.

Defensive standouts included Wilson (6 tackles, 1 for loss, 1 interception), Christian Gray (5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 for loss, 1 fumble recovery), Hudson Fry (5 tackles), Cameron Diver (4 tackles, 1 fumble recovery) and CK Vasquez (4 tackles).

Burnet 24, JV Lions 14

BURNET – The Brownwood JV Lions slipped to 4-3-1 on the season with a 24-14 road loss to Burnet Thursday night.

After turning the ball over on four straight possessions, the Lions fell behind 24-0 before making a late charge.

Freshman quarterback Riggs Gray threw touchdown passes to junior Durham Brown and sophomore Conner Cornelius. Cornelius also ran in a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

The Lions defense came up with two stops deep in Brownwood territory late to give the Lions a chance to rally for the win.

The JV Lions play Stephenville next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Gordon Wood Stadium, following the freshman game at 5 p.m.

Lake Belton 26, Combined Team 16

LAKE BELTON – The Brownwood Subvarsity Combined Team is now 2-6 on the year following with a 26-16 road loss to Lake Belton Thursday afternoon.

Lajon Bush and Cannon Calvert both ran for touchdowns, and Bush added a two-point conversion.

Defensively, Brayden Tlahuel-Torres recorded eight tackles, Michael Dodson added six, and D’Iondre Watkins forced a fumble that was recovered by Brayden Middleton.

Also, Eli Waldrop intercepted a two-point conversion attempt and ran it back for two points.
