Well, I thought I had better give you an update on the football season. I say that with a little tinge of humor in there. But, in Brownwood, Texas there is no room for a tinge of humor.

The Brownwood Lions are off to a bad start. I say bad, they are off to a one and one record. Wylie couldn’t even play us – RAIN or lightning. Then, Brownwood had a terrible game against what was supposed to be one of the top rated 3A teams in Texas. They beat Mason in their first game. They played us second and we beat them by thirty points less than what we were supposed to. Then came the other night when we played the Number 2 team in Texas in 4A Division II. What was the final in that ballgame? It was 44-16. It was 30-3 at halftime. I’ll give you this. We couldn’t beat Glen Rose right now if we had to, and we don’t have to, and Stephenville is still on the horizon. They’re the Number 1 team in Division I. That’s our division. I guess what I’m saying is, well, we’re young and, we are kidding ourselves if we think we’re not inexperienced and Brownwood comes up with a magic bottle of potion of to fix what’s wrong with us. This is not going to be easy, but I’m going to tell you that unless we come up with a phenomenal game plan and beat Stephenville and even more than that, we’ve got to beat them and beat them enough to where they can’t come back in the fourth round and tar and feather us. What we can do is simply do what we can. We can get better every day. Just get better.

The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets – I felt so bad for Kevin Bachtel that I wanted to cry with him last night. It ended up a ballgame that we probably should have won – should have won. They ended up beating us by a score of 29 to 27. But, it was 22 to 0 at half time. Howard Payne played REAL good football in the second half. But I’m going to tell you right now, and if you haven’t heard, they will play three teams twice. That will be six of our ballgames. Then, the rest of them are non-conference games. But, Howard Payne looked GOOD in the second half of that ballgame yesterday. I mean, they looked real good!

So, if they decide they want to, which it didn’t look like they cared a lick when they started play yesterday, but if they can wad up and make a fist and get mad, then they will do better than I thought. I thought the best we could do was about a five and five, maybe a four and six, or three and seven, somewhere in that neck of the woods, and I still think that is a possibility.

I tell you, it breaks my heart to be honest with you, but Howard Payne has a two deep with very little experience and it will be a growing process with them. The high school, well, I’ve got concerns about the team, but I believe that they can win, and hopefully win before too long…

Until next time, so long everybody.
