Birds: Marvels of Migration

Join us for an engaging and educational morning as we explore the fascinating world of bird migration in Central Texas. Our special guest, Jimma Byrd, will lead participants on a captivating journey through the remarkable phenomenon of bird migration. Jimma is a Texas Master Naturalist, a Master Gardener, and a member of the Texas Ornithological Society (TOS). She founded and is president of the San Saba Bird and Nature Club. A fifth-generation Texan, Jimma earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Nevada Reno, where a college class in ornithology sparked her lifelong interest in birding. With over 40 years of experience in bird observation and study, Jimma brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the event.

“We are thrilled to host this event and offer the community an opportunity to connect with nature and learn from an avid birder like Jimma,” said Brody L. Stacy, President of Texas Botanical Gardens & Native American Interpretive Center, Inc. “Bird migration is a remarkable natural phenomenon, and our gardens provide the perfect setting to appreciate and understand these incredible journeys.”

Event Highlights

The morning will start with an opportunity to observe these marvelous creatures in their natural habitat during a guided stroll through the botanical gardens. Participants might expect to see various migrating birds, such as the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Painted Bunting, Swainson’s Hawk, and the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. These birds migrate through the region during different times of the year, showcasing the incredible diversity of avian life in Central Texas. Following the guided stroll, Jimma will share insights into the incredible journeys undertaken by migratory birds, the challenges they face, the vital role Central Texas plays in their migration patterns, and the importance of preserving natural habitats.
