Multiple media outlets late Monday reported a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 10:38 p.m. near Snyder. The earthquake rated as the eighth-most intense to ever strike the state of Texas. 

The Abilene/San Angelo office of the National Weather Service reported the USGS stated the location was approximately 10.6 miles northeast of Hermleigh, and occurred at a depth of approximately 4.8 miles.

A 4.4 magnitude aftershock was reported at 10:46 p.m.

The quake was felt by residents of the Concho Valley and Big Country – including Brownwood according to social media – all the way to parts of the Metroplex.

In December 2022 a 5.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Midland, but Monday’s quake is the biggest this far north in the state since 1925.
