The Brownwood Art Association is inviting BAA members and the public to two free weekend events at the Art Center, 215 Fisk St.  For those interested in ceramics, local potter Mike Lewis will be giving an art talk and demonstration from 10 am- 12 noon on Saturday, July 13.  Mike’s pottery is also part of the current exhibit at the Art Center.

Starting with a slide show presenting a historical overview of methods and types of pottery, Lewis will then give a demonstration on the potter’s wheel. “My specialty is a type of pottery called raku, and I’ll be bringing some pots that need to be trimmed,” says Lewis.  “I’ll also be covering the 11 steps it takes to make a pot, from start to finish.”

A BAA Membership Meeting is scheduled for Sunday afternoon from 1:30-3:00 pm, and the public is also welcome to attend.  Program Coordinator Yvette Winn says “The focus of this meeting is to introduce our new Board of Directors.  And we are always looking for new members, so anyone interested in the arts is welcome.”

The meeting will also include an interview with the BAA Artist of the Year, Mary Green Engle.  Mary is a founding member of the BAA Fiber and Textile Arts group, and her colorful upcycled, embroidered, and embellished clothing is featured in the current Art Center exhibit, which continues through July 24.

For more information about the BAA and Art Center events, follow the BAA on Facebook, and visit the BAA website, brownwoodart.net.  Regular gallery hours are Mon.-Fri. from 2-6 pm.  Gallery admission is always free.
