At approximately 8:00 a.m., Officers of the Coleman Police Department and the Coleman County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Coleman High School for a report of a student with a gun.

Officers made contact with the student and retrieved a handgun from the student. The student was taken into custody without incident.

1:20 P.M. UPDATE: Coleman ISD has issued the following press release:

This morning, our district campuses implemented a lock-down. Due to the quick actions of the District and local law enforcement, our students were safe and secure at all times. Although a Coleman ISD student brought a firearm to the high school campus today, one of our students did exactly what we have taught our students to do – the student saw a social media post related to the firearm and reported it to the Administration first thing this morning. The District immediately went into a lockdown, and the Coleman Police Department and Sheriff’s Department were on the scene in minutes. Officers secured the weapon, and the student was taken into custody. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we teach our students that if they “see something, they should say something”, which is exactly what our student did. We are grateful to this fine student who reported the firearm and to the local law enforcement community who so quickly responded to assist us in ensuring the safety of our students.

Thank you, Brandon McDowell, Superintendent, Coleman ISD
