LUBBOCK – Brownwood Lion senior River Prado placed third in boys singles in the Region I-4A tennis tournament, which took place Friday and Saturday, as he wasn’t afforded the opportunity for a playback match to attempt to finish second and secure a berth in the UIL Class 4A state tournament.

On Friday, Prado defeated Depp Andrus of Krum (6-3, 6-1) followed by a victory over Talon Gilbert of West Plains (6-1, 6-1). Armando Moreno-Ortega of Burkburnett then knocked off Prado, 6-0, 6-1 to advance to Saturday’s championship. Meanwhile, Prado picked up the bronze medal by default Saturday morning as Landry Lowrey of Burkburnett was unable to compete.

Needing Moreno-Ortega to defeat Andrews’ Maddux Foster in the championship match to force a playback between Foster and Prado for second place, Moreno-Ortega came up on the short end, 6-3, 6-1.

Also for Brownwood, Emma Delgado and Raylei Hickey, in girls doubles, won their first match over Aspen Elkington and Corinne Roberts of Krum, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Lady Lions fell in their second match, however, 6-3, 6-0 to Brylee Jesko and Brooke Rebstock of Canyon.

In boys doubles, Lions Caleb Dietlin and Blake Hutchins were upended in their only match, 6-2, 6-2 by Brayden Baumgartner and Zeke Carillo of Seminole.

Prado advanced to regionals by winning the District 6-4A boys singles championship, while Brownwood’s two doubles teams qualifiers were both district runners-up.
