Current post Commander Bill Yeager presenting past post Commander Paul Wade a plaque for his outstanding Leadership as post commander.

How it started and where we are today. The American Legion was founded in March of 1919 and later that year it was Chartered by Congress. One reason for the formation of the American Legion was to help those service members returning to the States after WW1. The Legion assisted them in adjusting back to civilian life; helping with employment, education, and housing to name a few. The Legion also focused on the service members’ spouses and their children and their similar needs, as many of them were dependent on the income of the service member.

The same is true today. With a worldwide membership of 1.8 million veterans, The American Legion is one of the largest veteran organizations. The American Legion played a leading role in drafting and passing the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the G.I. Bill. The American Legion is very active in lobbying on behalf of the interests of Veterans such as pensions and health care.

The American Legion is a Non-Profit organization as it does not receive any government assistance. The local American Legion Post, Post #196 located in the 36th Division Memorial Park, Brownwood operates on membership dues, fundraising and the generosity of this community. On April 6th, 2024 our Post hosted a fundraising event at the Brownwood Clay Bird Club. Through the registration fees and the generosity of the Sponsors (Businesses and Individuals) we raised funds to help local Veterans in our Community. Similar to what they did in 1919, helping Veterans and their families.

American Legion Post #196 hosted a fundraising event at the Brownwood Clay Bird Club on April 6, 2024 to help local Veterans in our Community.

If you are a Honorably discharged Veteran or Active Duty Military and served at least one day of active duty status, you are eligible to join the American Legion.

American Legion Post #196 is located at 1600 Burnett, across from Hendrick Hospital, in Memorial Park. Post meetings are the second Tuesday of each month. A meal is provided at 1800 hours followed by a Post meeting at 1900 hours.

In each upcoming article, I will recognize local businesses who support our veterans: Marathon Medical and Texas Bank. Thank you for your support.
