The office of District Attorney Micheal Murray issued the following press release Monday morning:

District Attorney Micheal Murray reported that on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024 a Brown County jury convicted Charles Daniel Johnson, 51, of Stalking. The jury also assessed a 20-year sentence in prison and a $10,000 fine.

First Assistant District Attorney Elisha Bird and Assistant District Attorney LorAnn Garrett Newman presented evidence during the four-day trial that Johnson had become fixated on a young woman and had been stalking her for over 17 years.

Johnson has previously been convicted of stalking this same victim in 2009 and continued the same type of actions upon his release from prison. Bird and Garrett Newman put on evidence that Johnson carried around an engagement ring that he had for the victim and would not stop attempting to contact her despite a criminal trespass order and two protective orders.

Johnson was sentenced to the maximum sentence the jury could assess. The jury was able to consider all of Johnson’s action in persisting in his pursuit of his victim, including numerous witnesses testifying that they had repeatedly told Johnson to leave her alone over the course of many years.

Bird and Garrett Newman asked the jury to protect the victim from further abuse for as long as possible and to put a stop to Johnson’s continued harassment.
