Shelly Lynn Smith, a beloved member of the Brownwood Community, passed away unexpectedly on January 22, 2024, at the age of 53. Shelly was born on November 7, 1970, in Brownwood, Texas to Deborah Ann McKee. She was a vibrant soul who brought light and joy to those around her.

Shelly’s journey began at Brownwood High School, where she cultivated lasting friendships and a strong sense of community. Her passion for education led her to Texas Tech University, where she earned a degree in Early Childhood Development. Armed with her knowledge and a heart full of love, Shelly embarked on a career that would bless the lives of numerous children.

On November 26, 2019, Shelly joined hands in marriage with the love of her life, Christopher Smith. Together, they shared a deep and unwavering love that served as an inspiration to all who knew them.

Shelly’s nurturing spirit and dedication to children extended far beyond her own family. For 20 years, she owned and ran Sunshine World daycare in Coleman, where she touched the lives of countless children. Shelly’s daycare became a second home to many, as she poured her heart and soul into providing a safe and loving environment.

Shelly had an outspoken personality and a penchant for all things bling. Known for her impeccable style, she had a knack for making every occasion extraordinary. Whether it was planning parties or dressing up, Shelly’s vibrant presence would light up any room.

While her family held a special place in Shelly’s heart, her love extended beyond bloodlines. She embraced every child she met as her own, showering them with unconditional love and care. Shelly’s selflessness knew no bounds, as she always went above and beyond to meet the needs of those around her.

In her spare time, Shelly found solace in the pages of a good book and enjoyed lounging in her hammock, basking in the tranquility of nature. Her beloved four-legged companion was a constant source of joy and comfort.

Shelly will be deeply missed by her cherished family, including her loving husband, Christopher Smith; her son, Kutter Cross, and daughter-in-law, Danielle Ryan; father-in-law, Charlie Smith and wife Barbara; her nieces, Becki Lusk and husband Brad, Ashton Crow, Hylan Bolton and Amiley Crow; nephew, Hayde Bolton; great niece and nephew, Jackson and Ava Lusk; brother, Ricky Crow; brother-in-law, Jeff Smith; sister-in-law, Angie Smith; granddaughter, Sarah Dodson; ex-husband, Steven Cross; aunts, Pam Scheberl, Teresa Culpepper and husband Tommy; cousins, Bindi Malone and Izabelle Wright. She also leaves behind a host of extended family members, daycare kids and friends who were touched by her love and presence.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kaitlyn Ann Cross; mother Deborah Ann McKee; grandmother, Rebecca Ann McKee; father-in-law, Floyd Cross and uncle Mickey McKee.

With heavy hearts, Shelly’s family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating her life. Her family will host a visitation on Friday, January 26th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 27th, at 10:00 am at the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel in Early, with interment to follow at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood.

As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman who brought light, love, and laughter into our lives, let us remember Shelly Lynn Smith as a compassionate caregiver, a celebration enthusiast, and an unwavering pillar of strength. She may be gone, but her spirit will forever reside in our hearts. May she rest in eternal peace.
