TxDOT Brownwood District Prepares for Winter Weather

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), an arctic airmass will move through the district over the weekend. With temperatures forecasted to drop below freezing and possibly into the single digits through Tuesday, TxDOT crews began pretreatment activities Thursday throughout the Brownwood District and other areas of the state.

Major roadways and raised structures, in all nine of the Brownwood District’s counties, were treated with brine, a salt and water mixture that helps keep frozen precipitation from adhering to the road surface.

Windchill values are expected to range from -25° to 0° F for the northern half of the state, posing a significant threat to people, pets, plants and exposed pipes.

Those traveling are reminded to stay aware in case patterns shift and make sure your vehicle is ready: check all fluids, tire pressure, and the condition of windshield wipers. Have blankets or warm clothing along with water and snacks in case you become stranded along the roadway.

Below are driving tips for adverse winter weather conditions:

  • Always buckle up, every passenger, every ride
  • Drive to conditions
  • Turn on headlights to be visible to other motorists
  • Turn off cruise control and lane assist
  • Accelerate and brake gently
  • Approach bridges and curves with caution
  • Increase following distance to allow plenty of time to stop for the vehicle ahead
