Well, we had four and now it’s down to two – Washington or Michigan. One of them will be the National Champion in football for this past season. I’m not really concerned about who is going to win it all. I wanted Texas to win and they didn’t, but those semi-final games were special.

Let’s talk about how good the games were. I’m just blown away. TCU upset Michigan last year then turned around and played Georgia and got beat 50 or so. Awful, pitiful ballgame! This year, Texas lost by six points but they were throwing into Washington’s end zone the last four plays from inside the opposition 20. If you have to get a closer game than that, you look at Michigan taking on Alabama in the other semi. They go to overtime. So, you have four teams that you can just kind of toss them together, throw them up in the air, and see who fell down with the win. In other words, all of them were capable of being the National Champions.

So, what’s going to happen next year? More of the same? Afraid not. It’s been ten to fifteen years since we started having a final four. We had the two semi-final games and then, a week later, the National Championship game. Most years, we had good ballgames – GOOD ballgames. We had great ballgames this year but what’s going to happen next year, it scares me. It’s going to be a twelve team playoff. A twelve team playoff to determine the National Champion. It sounds like a college Super Bowl. I think they may get their wish, but at what cost. I don’t even want to go through all the details of who and what, but I’ve got several problems with it…several problems. For one, I think the Bowl field is going to be cut down. It’s certainly going to affect bowl games and I could go on and on, but I don’t like the fact that twelve teams are going to have this playoff. I could have gone eight and I think I would have been pretty happy. Eight means that you play an extra week and get down to where you want to be. Twelve? You’ve got to play at least two extra weeks. When do they rest?

What was the old thing they used to talk about back when I was a kid a long time ago? They didn’t want to play for a National Championship because it interfered with school work. Mercy! Where did that argument go? Back in my day, you played on January 1 – all the bowls. We didn’t have very many. We had the Sugar, the Cotton, the Rose, the Orange and I guess that’s about it. They were all played on New Year’s Day. It’s been modified ever since then. Now you’re going to try to go to twelve teams? Twelve? Well, have fun playing in February or whatever. But they are going to push this farther back. And, what about that transfer portal? Your team qualifies and 6 players enter the transfer portal and 3 Seniors or Juniors declare for the NFL, what then? Twelve teams? I don’t like it and that’s just one of the reasons. I really don’t like it and I think we’ll find out why next year.

Until next time, so long everybody!
