Christmas on the Plaza marks beginning of holiday season at HPU

Since 2003, Howard Payne University has celebrated the start of the Christmas season by hosting a gathering and a lighting of the campus’ Old Main Park with Christmas lights. This tradition has evolved over the last 20 years into what is now known as Christmas on the Plaza.

This year, the event began with the Heritage Chapel Band singing Christmas carols while students, faculty, staff and friends decorated Christmas ornaments, made s’mores and sipped hot chocolate.

“My favorite thing about Christmas on the Plaza is the people here,” said Diondray Parker, a sophomore from Portland, Texas.

Colin Thompson, sophomore from De Leon, agreed, saying, “My favorite part is spending time with friends.”

For freshman Julie Ivy of Shiner, the event provides a festive opportunity to catch up with friends she doesn’t get to see very often.

“My favorite part,” she said, “is seeing friends who I don’t get to have class with and being out here together.”

After a few carols, the crowd gathered around a fire while Dr. Cory Hines, HPU president, read the story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospel of Luke, reminding everyone of the reason for the celebration. Then Brylee Awbrey, senior from Midland, began the countdown for the lighting of Old Main Park, which was illuminated by a towering Christmas tree and a nativity scene.

The event was planned by Kailee Torgerson, director of student leadership and engagement.

“I love getting to celebrate this tradition with our students, faculty, staff and the community each year,” said Torgerson. “Christmas on the Plaza is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.”

The first day of classes for HPU’s spring 2024 semester is Tuesday, Jan. 16. Visit www.hputx.edu for more information about HPU, including details on registration.
