The Department of Public Safety recently issued the following information regarding a one-vehicle accident at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 on State Highway 36, five miles northwest of Gustine, that claimed two lives.

The driver of a 2012 Ford F350 pickup truck, 23-year-old Irvin Said Vazquez Gandara from Mexico, and 27-year-old passenger Misael Rubi Deanda, from Gustine, both died at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling southeast on State Highway 36. Due to the rain, wet road, and possible intoxication, the driver lost traction and left his lane of travel striking the endcap of a guardrail to his right. The vehicle traveled south through a ditch and collided with a tree.

Neither person in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.
