Benton Browder Hooks, a devoted father, retired teacher, Boy Scout leader, and deacon, passed away on August 24, 2023, in Brownwood, TX. He was born on August 9, 1948, in Austin, TX, to Tomas Benton Hooks, Jr., and Eleanor Ann Browder Hooks.
Ben is survived by his sons and their families. His older son, Kyle Hooks, along with his wife Megan and their daughters Leah and Zoe, reside in May, TX. His younger son, Kendall Hooks, his wife Victoria, and their daughter Ellie live in North Richland Hills, TX. The family eagerly anticipates the arrival of a new addition, Wesley, expected in October. Ben also leaves behind his brother, Fred Hooks of Tow, TX.
He also left a legacy of adopting as his own people in need of love. To wit, he is also survived by his godson Jay Gomez, his wife Cheryl, and their children Clay, Dustin and Will of Liberty Hill, TX. In the same vein, he is survived by his adopted granddaughter Casie McCarley, her husband Taylor, and their sons Westyn and Briar of San Angelo, TX.
Ben’s commitment to service and his love for people were at the forefront of his life. His legacy extends beyond his career in the military and as a teacher. He cherished his role as a Boy Scout leader, a role that saw him become a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and a dedicated C.O.P.E. director.
Known for his resourcefulness and generosity, Ben impacted countless lives through his kindness and compassion. He was a shining example of self-sufficiency and care, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
A devote follower of Jesus, Ben’s faith was unwavering, and he faced the end of his journey with the assurance of eternal life. His spirit will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Ben’s life on September 16 at his residence in Mertzon. A potluck lunch will be served, as stories and memories are shared in honor of a remarkable life.
Education and learning were near to Ben’s heart. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a local educational cause near you in his name. Your generosity in honoring his memory is deeply appreciated.

Online condolences, memories and tributes can be made to the family at www.heartlandfuneralhome.net
