Well, it’s that time of year again. When I hear the words “coaching school” I know that the start of football season is upon us. It will be here before you know it, so I thought I would do a little bit of a preseason show if that’s okay.

I look at the charts in six man football, and in Division 1 the May Tigers jump out. They’re always good and they will be good again. In Division 2, there are a bunch…Jayton, Loraine, Cherokee, Richland Springs, Rising Star, Rochelle, Zephyr – and those are the good ones.

In 2A Division 1, there are a lot of good teams around here – Hawley, Tolar, Crawford, Mason, Cisco, Stamford, Coleman. In 2A Division 2 there’s Albany and Bremond. The Bangs Dragons? I may be a little bit optimistic. I think in the early season they will struggle a little bit with a new coach, but they could be pretty good by the end of the year.

In 3A Division 1 there’s Brock, Lorena, Llano, Jim Ned. Division 2 starts off with Canadian and back down this way there’s Wall, and Comanche may be a sleeper this year. That’s it for Division 2, oh, except for the Early Longhorns. They had a terrific season last year. They got beat in the second round and I think the same thing may happen this year.

Now to 4A, lets start with Division 2 – Carthage, number one team by a mile, then there’s Cuero, and Brownwood opponent, Glen Rose. Then Wimberley, another Brownwood opponent Waco Connally, then Wichita Falls Hirschi, then Graham.

Finally, and by the way, I’m not going to look at 5A or 6A. 4A Division 1, China Spring, Stephenville, Decatur – that’s one of the teams that we scrimmage in three weeks or so – then Brownwood followed by Kennedale, Wichita Falls, Waco LaVega, and Alvarado. Plenty of good ball clubs in 4A Division 1.

Now Brownwood will open against Abilene Wylie and I didn’t mention them because they are a 5A team. Again like last year, it will probably be a terrific ballgame. Brownwood has the same district and non district schedule. Non district they’ve got toughies but they get six home games as compared to four last year – that’s got to help. One of the road games will be at Glen Rose. They will also be at Burnet, which will be better. Waco Connally, I personally think that’s going to be one of the best pre district games around. Then, of course, there’s Stephenville. The Yellow Jackets will be very good again this year and that game is going to be played in Brownwood.

Then, there’s District play. We have four District ballgames, and you know, I saw one publication that said Brownwood ought to go undefeated and win the District Championship. The other one said they would finish second behind Lubbock Estacado. Here’s what I think. We win!

So, what about the Brownwood Lions. Well, we’re going to be a good ball club but it may take us a little while. We have one starter – the quarterback – back on offense but we did have a good JV. On defense, I think we are pretty stout so I think we’ll stay in ballgames early on. How far will we go? I thought we came up short last year going three rounds deep. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t go farther than that.

Until next time, so long everybody.
