During Tuesday’s Brownwood City Council meeting, Brownwood Municipal Executive Director Ray Tipton provided additional information on the future plans for the former Kroger building.

The City Council ratified the BMDD Board of Directors Monday action that approved awarding a Building Improvement Incentive Program grant – a 50 percent matching grant not to exceed $25,000 – to Tabat Properties, Ltd. “a development company that is building out the property for an (undisclosed) tenant,” according to Tipton. The property is located at 302 N. Main.

“The former Kroger store itself, not counting Dollar Tree, is going to be divided into two different retail spots,” Tipton told the Council. “They have a tenant for one of them. They applied for the grant just based on asbestos abatement as the estimate is about $77,000, not counting the state fees. The entire project will be over $1 million in renovations. They’re going to end up busting out the entire slab and pouring a new slab in there, and putting up walls. The porch facade that’s there now will come off and there will be a completely new facade.”

Tipton stated that the future business does not wish to be revealed at this time.

The City Council also ratified the BMDD Board’s Monday decision to approve a Building Improvement Incentive Program grant – a 50 percent matching grant not to exceed $10,000 – to Scott Morelock for a property located at 207 N. Fisk. Tipton stated Morelock plans to paint his law office inside and out and replace rotting wood around windows and doors, at an expected cost of $40,000.
