Howard Payne University will host a Health Science Enrichment Workshop (HSEW) July 6-7. The event, to be held on the HPU campus as well as onsite at Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood, is sponsored by Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) and will provide a hands-on enrichment experience for high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a health profession.

“We are excited to provide this workshop as a way to show students various medical professions and the excellent pipelines available through HPU,” shared Dr. Kristen Hutchins, dean of the School of Science and Mathematics and co-director of HSEW.

The workshop is organized by HPU’s School of Nursing and School of Science and Mathematics and will provide opportunities for students to engage in exercises related to their field of interest. Activities will include science labs, healthcare simulations (suture/staple removal, basic EKG interpretation, emergency resuscitation) and Stop the Bleed® certification. Through a partnership with Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood, participants will also be matched with a healthcare profession of their choice for a shadowing experience followed by a roundtable discussion with a variety of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Laci Sutton, dean of HPU’s School of Nursing and co-director of HSEW, commented on the impact of the collaboration with Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood.

“Collaboration with Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood is vital to HSEW as we aim to expose participants to a variety of healthcare professions.” said Dr. Sutton. “We would also like to thank Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood for their donation of a Lifepak 12 defibrillator/monitor, which will be used for simulation during the workshop.”

The deadline for application is June 7 and the workshop fee is $100, but some scholarships are available through the application process. Students must be 16 or older to apply. For more information or to apply, students can visit the HPU website: https://www.hputx.edu/2023-health-science-enrichment-workshop-application/.
