Howard Payne University’s Summer and Young Scholars program has been scheduled for July 17-21, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on the HPU campus. The popular, annual event is designed to provide intense, fun and academically stimulating summer camp programming for children entering grades 1-6.

Summer Scholars is a program for children entering grades 4-6 and features innovative instruction in computer engineering, brain biology, space engineering and physical education. Young Scholars is a program for children entering grades 1-3 and provides creative instruction in reading, art engineering, math for engineering, and physical education. Students will enjoy an exciting academic curriculum that is designed specifically for their school age.

“The goal of the program is to challenge school-age children academically with innovative teaching in a variety of subjects,” said Dr. Julie Welker, chair of HPU’s Department of Communication and director of the program. “This year, our theme is Brain Engineers, so we will be focusing on different aspects of the brain and engineering in different disciplines.”

Dr. Welker added that the program exposes elementary-aged students to the HPU campus, a college classroom and an academic environment.

“All of our instructors are either professors at HPU or award-winning, experienced high school teachers,” she said. “Each instructor offers hands-on, creative applications of his or her discipline in each class.”

Registration fee for the program is $150 and includes a Summer and Young Scholars t-shirt, swag, daily snacks and supplies. Deadline for registration is Friday, July 7.

Registration is online at www.hputx.edu/summerandyoungscholars. For more information, visit the program’s Facebook page: HPU Summer and Young Scholars.
