Silently surrounding us, natural and synthetic fibers are our most intimate and constant companions.  In our clothing, carpets, and curtains, bed sheets, blankets, and bath towels, they stay mostly in the background.  But every so often they deserve and demand our full attention as works of fine art.  Now is that time.

The Art of Fiber exhibit opens this Thursday, June 1, with a reception from 5-7 pm at the Brownwood Art Center, 215 Fisk.  This event is free and open to the public.

The Brownwood Art Association Fiber and Textile Arts group started meeting last year, and immediately showed an exceptional level of quality and diversity.  “It seemed like it was just the right time and place for this group of artists to find each other,” says member Greg Hancock.  “We have a lot of fun at our meetings, and everyone is happy to share their work and their ideas, so it’s a great way to learn.”

In that spirit of sharing, group members will be offering a series of workshops and demonstrations at the Art Center.  These events are free and open to the public, with all materials provided.

Saturday June 3, from 1-3 pm, a Wool Felting workshop introduces different felting techniques.  Make a 10″x 10″ felted painting to take home.  Ages 10 and up.

Sunday June 11, from 2-3 pm, a Machine Knitting demonstration.

Saturday June 17, from 10 am to 12 noon, Fiber Art for Kids, ages 6-12.  The activity will be making fiber art greeting cards.

Saturday June 24, from 1-3 pm, Spinning Art Yarn demonstration.  Art yarn, also called novelty yarn, has extra color, texture, or embellishments like beads or sequins.

The Art of Fiber exhibit is on display through June 28.  Gallery hours are 2-6 pm, weekdays.  For more information about the exhibit, the Fiber and Textile Arts group,  or the Brownwood Art Association, visit www.brownwoodart.net, find the BAA on Facebook, or call the Art Center at 325-641-2916.
