AUSTIN – On the grandest stage, Zephyr Lady Bulldog Ronni McClain turned in the best performance of her athletic career, establishing a new person record of 10-3 in the Class A girls pole vault to earn a silver medal Saturday afternoon at the University of Texas Myers’ Stadium.

With a previous best performance of 9-3 cleared to place second at the Region III-A meet, McClain surpassed 9-6, 9-9, 10-0 and 10-3, leaving her behind only state champion Paisley Chandler of Iredell – who required just one try to clear 10-3 while McClain took all three.

McClain also needed three attempts to clear the opening height of 8-0, then caught fire as she cleared 8-6 and 9-0 on the first try, 9-6 and 9-9 on the second, and 10-0 and 10-3 on the third.

Also Saturday, Blanket Tiger Levi Vasquez chipped in a seventh-place effort in the Class A boys long jump Saturday, which started and ended around the same time as the Class A girls discus.

Vazquez, the Region III-A runner-up, jumped a best distance of 20-1 in Austin, which came on his very first attempt. Vazquez followed with an 18-2, 18-5.75, 18-11.25 and 18-6.25.

Christian Coker of Henrietta Midway won the state championship with a distance of 21-5.75 followed by silver medalist Amareion Bookman of Goodrich (21-5) and bronze medalist Bryce Virdell of Van Horn (21-3.5).
