SWEETWATER – The District 7-A champion May Tigers stormed into the third round of the Region I-A baseball playoffs Wednesday thanks to a pair of victories, 12-1 and 15-5, over the Westbrook Wildcats.

In the 12-1 opening victory, May scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, three times in the second, and added seven runs in the third. Westbrook scratched across its lone run in the top of the fourth inning.

The Tigers collected 11 hits, drew six walks and were aided by a Westbrook error.

Lane Goodson led the charge with four hits – including a double – followed by two each from Bryson Guerrero – who doubled – and J.D. White, and one apiece from Cayson Dail, Braden Steele, and Kaden Watkins – who doubled. Dail, White and Luke McKenzie finished with two RBIs while Goodson, Watkins, and Steele each drove in one.

On the mound, McKenzie tossed four innings and allowed one run on one hit with nine strikeouts and three walks. Goodson worked a scoreless inning and yielded one hit with one strikeout.

The 15-5 nightcap saw May fall behind 5-1 after the first inning. The Tigers answered with 11 runs in the top of the third to grab a 12-5 advantage, and May scored twice more in the fourth inning and once in the fifth to enforce the 10-run mercy rule.

The Tigers generated 12 hits, drew eight walks and Westbrook committed an error.

May’s offensive onslaught featured two triples and three RBIs from Goodson; two singles and an RBI from Steele, Guerrero and McKenzie; a double and three RBIs from White; and a double and two RBIs from Watkins, Ben Harrell and Hagan Hester.

Goodson went the distance on the mound, tossing all five innings while allowing five runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.

May – which has scored 51 runs in its four playoff games – will move on to face either District 6 champion Ira or District 7 runner-up Gorman in the regional semifinals next weekend. Ira and Gorman square off a three-game series at McMurry University Thursday and Saturday.
