Joining Brownwood at the UIL Track and Field State Championships at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium in Austin May 11-13 will be four additional Brown County schools as athletes from Bangs, May, Zephyr and Blanket also qualified during weekend regional meets.

The top two finishers in each regional event automatically qualify for state, and the top third-place finisher among all four regions throughout the state also punches a ticket for Austin.

At the Region I-2A meet in Canyon, Bangs’ Guy Powell finished second in the boys 100 meters, while the Dragons 4×100 relay team of Powell, Hunter Newton, Tyson Woods, and Keygan Pitts also came in second to qualify.

Lady Dragon Kasey Solis, in the girls long jump, was third to place her in wild card contention.

At the Region II-A meet in San Angelo, May Lady Tiger Amanda Harrell won the girls discus competition and came in second in the shot put to advance in both events.

Kenleigh Williford placed second in the girls long jump (16-10.75) to earn a berth as well, but fell later during the meet in the 300-meter hurdles race and broke her collarbone and thus will not be able to compete at state.

The May Tigers’ mile relay notched a third-place finish to land themselves in wild card contention.

At the Region III-A meet in Whitney, Zephyr’s Ronni McClain second in the girls pole vault (9-3) and Blanket’s Levi Vazquez was the runner-up in the boys long jump (20-6) to move on to Austin.

In wild card contention in Zephyr’s Eli Williams after a third-place effort in the boys 3200 meters (10:39.67).

Story will be updated with times, and determinations on wild card possibilities

May’s Kenleigh Williford also qualified but will not be able to compete due to injury
