Brownwood High School (BHS) HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students participated in the 2023 Texas HOSA State Leadership Conference March 28-30 in Round Rock, TX. BHS students returned from the conference with several honors, including seven seniors who were awarded a combined total of $22,000 in scholarships.
“We finished the state conference with three international qualifiers and some in the top 5 in the state,” said BHS Health Science teacher Annalyn Deen.
BHS HOSA students earned the following honors and awards:
Kali Alvin – 2nd Place Research Persuasive Writing and Speaking
Aishwarya Nigalye – 4th Place Epidemiology, Health Care Issues Exam State Finalist
Magaly Cervantes – Organizational Leadership
ATC Testing Recognition
This testing only happens at the state conference and covers specific content areas. The following students signed up for these in advance and placed in the top 10:

Noelie De La Torre – Anatomy and Physiology
“We also took seven seniors to state who applied for a scholarship, and all seven received one,” said Deen. “That is a huge accomplishment.”

Principal Lindsay Smith praised the BHS HOSA program, which continues to earn top honors each year. “HOSA is one of our brightest programs at BHS; there is something for everyone interested in the medical profession. Ms. Scull and Ms. Deen do a marvelous job of building relationships with kids and encouraging them to be school and Brownwood community leaders. I am so proud of these educators and the kids who have worked hard and shown dedication.”
The BHS HOSA program was also recognized at the conference for work on blood drives coordinated by the group. “We also received bronze recognition for our blood drives donation of over 100 units this past year,” noted Deen.
“I am so proud of these students and all of their hard work,” stated Deen. “When our students realize they are competing against magnet schools and pre-college high schools that only focus on Health Science, they realize just how big of an accomplishment it is to be recognized at the state level.”
