Lions baseball chalks up tournament victories over Gainesville, Krum

Taylor Bessent (8) finished with two hits and two RBIs in a 9-1 win over Gainesville for Brownwood (11-4)

KRUM – The Brownwood Lions returned to the win column Friday with a pair of Boyd/Bowie baseball tournament victories, knocking off Gainesville, 9-1, and Krum, 2-1.

In the 2-1 triumph over Krum, the game was tied at 1 after one inning and Brownwood pushed the winning run across the plate in the top of the third inning.

The Lions recorded nine hits – two each by Logan Posey and Owen Huntsinger, and one apiece by Gavin Brandstetter, David Turner, Cole Miller, Campbell Gilmore and Antonio Ybarra. Turner was credited with an RBI.

On the mound, Luke Gray limited Krum to one run on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings. The Brownwood defense did not commit an error.

Against Gainesville, the Lions trailed 1-0 after one one inning but answered with three runs in the top of the second, four in the third, and two more runs in the fourth frame.

The Lions finished with 11 hits, including four for extra bases – a triple by Jack Field and doubles by Taylor Bessent, Justin Valdez and Miller. Bessent and Valdez led the way with two hits apiece followed by Field, Miller, Jordyn Nickerson, Case Markham, Cameron Harte, Eli Goodrich and Aidan Howard. Bessent led the way with two RBIs trailed by Miller, Howard, Field and Posey.

Miller picked up the win on the mound, yielding one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

The Lions (11-4) conclude tournament play at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bowie against Burkburnett.
