Gavin Brandstetter recorded three hits and two RBIs for Brownwood (8-3), which opens district play at Mineral Wells Tuesday night

STEPHENVILLE – The Brownwood Lions will head into their District 6-4A baseball opener at Mineral Wells Tuesday night on a three-game win streak, thanks to Saturday’s 7-2 triumph over Grandview in the finale of the Stephenville tournament.

Leading 1-0 after one inning, the Lions stretched the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third. After Grandview scored its only runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Lions answered with their final two in the bottom half.

Brownwood generated nine hits – three by Gavin Brandstetter, two from Campbell Gilmore, and one each from Owen Huntsinger, Logan Posey, Jack Field and Antonio Ybarra. Brandstetter and Field finished with two RBI apiece while Huntsinger and Posey contribute one RBI each.

On the mound, Luke Gray worked four innings and allowed two runs on one hit with four strikeouts to notch the win. Austin Wright added two innings of scoreless relief with three hits allowed and a pair of strikeouts.

In the first inning, Case Markham reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch.

During Brownwood’s four-run third, David Turner walked with one out and Huntsinger singled home Cameron Harte – running for Turner. With two outs, Posey singled home Brandstetter, who reached on a single, then Field followed with a two-RBI single to right field that knocked in Huntsinger and Justin Valdez – running for Posey.

The final two runs for the Lions in the fourth were the result of a Brandstetter two-RBI single that plated Ybarra – who led off with a walk – and Jordyn Nickerson – who reached via error.

Next for the Lions (8-3) is a visit to Mineral Wells at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
