The Texas Department of Public Safety issued the following information regarding a two-vehicle accident that took place at 6:52 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 on U.S. Highway 183, approximately 8 miles north of May, that claimed the life of an Early man.

William Mark Calhoun, 70, perished in the accident as he was pronounced dead at the scene  at 7:04 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Bryan Thompson. According to the DPS, the deceased was not wearing a seat belt.

The passenger in the vehicle, 66-year-old Rhonda Hart Calhoun of Early, suffered non-incapacitating injures, was in stable condition, and transported to Hendrick Medical Center-Brownwood. The passenger was wearing a seat belt according to the DPS release.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1996 Suzuki Sidekick, driven by Calhoun, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 183 with a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze following. The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze failed to control the speed of the vehicle and struck the Suzuki Sidekick from behind. The Suzuki Sidekick lost control after the collision and rolled over, ejecting the driver.

Dylan James Pruitt, 21, of May, the driver of the Chevrolet Cruze, suffered non-incapacitating injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
