With profound sadness we announce the passing of Joyce Marie Schumann—loving and devoted mother, Grannie, GG and friend to all whose lives she touched—on December 5, 2022 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. She left us surrounded by family.

Joyce was born Joyce Marie Gesch in Miles, Texas on October 10, 1932 to Fritz William Gesch, Sr. and Theresa Alma Gesch. Childhood was not an easy one for Joyce, as she lost both of her parents at a very young age. Despite her hardships, she prospered in life and grew into a wonderful woman. Joyce graduated from San Angelo High School on May 24, 1950 and shortly after married Paul Frank Schumann in 1951. Paul and Joyce lived on their farm in Lohn, Texas where they raised cotton and their three children.

Joyce lived a vibrant life as a mother, homemaker, farmer’s wife and above all else, devoted Christian. She loved to cook and especially loved to bake. A staple at Thanksgiving and Christmas was Grannie’s homemade pecan pies. She was highly skilled in sewing and even handmade her children’s clothes. Many lively times were had at the farm where they would regularly host friends and neighbors for dances in their barn. Once the children moved out on their own, you could find Paul and Joyce out dancing at Cherry Springs every Sunday evening.

She was the beloved mother of Teresa Thomas, Rodney Schumann (Penny), and Leslie Schumann (Elisha); proud Grannie of Lorne Males (Courtney), Wesley Males, Riley Schumann (Lexie), Will Schumann, Peyton Schumann (Jordan Pieper), Morgan Tibbetts (Brody); adoring GG of Piper Males, Landyn and Presley Schumann, Hayslee and Hadley Schumann and Ackley Tibbetts.

She was predeceased by her parents, Fritz, Sr. and Theresa Gesch, devoted husband Paul, sister Agnes and brothers Raymond, Fritz, Jr. and Homer, and daughter Teresa Thomas.

A private inurnment will be held at a late date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.

Remembrances and condolences can be written to the family via the virtual guestbook on Joyce’s tribute page at www.stevensfuneralhome.com.  Stevens Funeral Home is honored to serve the Hammonds family.

“And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7
