Lions JV, Freshman teams complete undefeated district runs with sweep of Andrews

The Brownwood Lions subvarsity football teams wrapped up their campaigns with a combined 23-7 record, winning two of their final three games Thursday.

JV Lions 20, Andrews 14

The Brownwood JV Lions completed a 9-1 season with a perfect 4-0 District 2-4A Division I mark thanks to Thursday’s 20-14 victory over Andrews at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Lions opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown carry by Noah Gonzalez, but Andrews drew even at 6 by the end of the first quarter.

Brownwood took a 14-6 lead into halftime after a 24-yard scoring toss from Braeden Stacks to Case Burnett, and Gonzalez’s two-point run, in the second period.

The Lions stretched their lead to 20-6 in the third quarter as Stacks connected with Ross Stasner for a 23-yard touchdown on a leaping grab.

Andrews closed the gap to 20-14 with 2:30 left in the contest. After failing to convert a fourth down, the Lions turned the ball back over to Andrews, but Strasner made a game-winning interception for Brownwood in the final minute.

Other defensive standouts were Jaiden Gordon (7 tackles), Ricky Vasquez (6 tackles, 2 sacks), Treyvon Mitchell (6 tackles, 1 TFL), and Zakk Zabecki (4 tackles, INT, TFL).

Freshman Lions 28, Andrews 8

The Brownwood Freshman Lions put the finishing touches on an 8-2 campaign and completed a flawless 4-0 run through District 2-4A Division I competition with a 28-8 triumph over Andrews Thursday at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The only scoring in the first half was a 5-yard touchdown pass from Robbie Robinson to Carson Noe in the first period, and Eliuth Valenciano added the first of his four extra points.

The Lions stretched the lead to 21-0 by the end of the third quarter as Aiden Driskill hurled scoring tosses of 38 yards to Noe and 31 yards to Stone Ratliff.

Andrews crept within 21-8 on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the Lions tacked on an additional insurance score on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to Noe.

Stalwarts on the defensive end were Noe (9 tackles), Robinson (8 tackles, PBU) Reese Bishop (7 tackles), Ratliff (5 tackles, PBU), Evan Escobar (5 tackles), and Aaron Edmonds (INT).

Llano 28, Combined Team 0

LLANO – The Brownwood Subvarsity Lions Combined Team came up short in its season finale Thursday, falling to Llano by a 28-0 count.

Defensive standouts for Brownwood (6-4) were Jonathan Bush and Michael Herrada.
