The following questions were sent by Brownwood News to all candidates in the race for BISD School Board, Place 7.

  1. What is your connection to Brownwood ISD?

I have three children: J.W. (5 years), ClaraAnn (3 years) and Boone (10 months) so as a Brownwood BISD parent, my journey will begin next year and continue for the next two decades! BUT my support of Brownwood Schools has been ongoing through attendance at public events, financial support, and through business ownership in this community.

  1. Why do you want to serve on the BISD School Board?

As a community member, I have been looking for ways to increase my civic engagement that aligns with my strengths.  As a mother, I want to ensure that my children are safe, challenged, and supported as they begin their time in BISD.  As a business owner, I want to share my experience with human resources, financial stewardship, and leadership development with the District.  As a friend, I want to represent the views and opinions of my neighborhood and unite my neighborhood in support of BISD as we continue to strive for excellence.

  1. How would your addition to the school board be an improvement?

I have a unique insight into student preparedness following high school graduation through my education and work experience.   I have a Masters of Arts in Higher Education that focuses on student engagement and retention on college campuses. Essentially, how do we support students who choose the college path through to graduation?

Additionally, I have worked in Human Resources in the Fabrication industry which has instilled in me a respect for the Trade industry and key insights into the hiring challenges student choosing this path will face as well as the competitive nature of this job market.

This combination of experiences will ensure that our hiring decisions, financial allocation to activities, and support of the current administration is aligned with preparing our students for what comes after graduation which is the ultimate test of our success.

  1. What do you hope to accomplish during your tenure should you be elected?

I strongly believe that student success, at any age, is driven by the connections that they form inside and outside the classroom.

With this in mind my hopes for the term are:

  • Support as many continuing education opportunities as possible for our current faculty and staff so that they feel supported.
  • Use wisdom to create a diverse and competitive hiring package to draw well qualified candidates to open positions within the school district.
  • Support new and current extracurricular opportunities for student’s involvement outside the classroom so that all students can find something they are interested in.
  • Support the work inside the classroom for materials and resources needed to ensure all student’s success.
