BANGS – During Monday night’s meeting, the Bangs City Council authorized City Manager Erica Berry to seek Requests for Qualifications for solid waste collection.
“Waste Connections is our current solid waste collection service and our contract with them doesn’t technically expire until February 2024, however, we have had some issues and I know you’re all aware,” Berry told the council. “We can cancel this contract with a 60-day notice, and I think it’s worth looking at.”
Bangs Mayor Rick Phelps asked, “Do you we have to pay them out if we break the contract?”
Berry replied, “I don’t see anything that says that as long as we give them a 60-day notice.”
Phelps then spoke about numerous complaints both he and City Hall have received regarding waste collection from the citizens of Bangs, and the overall displeasure and inconsistency with the service.
Also Monday, the council approved Berry to move forward with the steps toward establishing a Planning and Zoning board, and pursue a firm to create zoning plans and ordinances for the City.
“As you are aware there are little to no zoning regulations, no codes to enforce other than those that are national codes,” Berry told the council. “I have spoken to a couple of firms. One gave me a number of under $50,000 and said it would take six to eight months, but I’d like to shop around. We definitely could form a Planning and Zoning Board, state regulations allow for that, and let them go through that process. I think it has to be 100 percent City of Bangs business owners or residents.”
During the comments portion of the meeting, Ken Loewrigkeit addressed the City Council regarding a partnership to bring more attention and potential Xtreem Flattrack Racing Series events to the track on the outskirts of town. Loewrigkeit’s 12-year-old son, Cohen, has won multiple national titles on the circuit.
Loewrigkeit added the only assistance he was seeking from the City, other than help with promotion, would be water as the venue is a dirt track that needs constant care and attention.
