Playoff-bound Brownwood tennis wraps up district with 13-6 win at Stephenville

STEPHENVILLE – The Brownwood High tennis team put a four-match skid behind them as they concluded District 6-4A action with a 13-6 victory over Stephenville Tuesday to secure the league’s third playoff seed.

Brownwood (8-7, 2-2) will face District 5-4A runner-up Brock, which opts to play up a classification in tennis, in the bi-district round at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Glen Rose.

The Lions swept all three doubles matches against Stephenville to set the pace with wins claimed by No. 1 River Prado and Taevion Nickerson (6-0, 6-2 over Elijah Cortez and Wesley Post), No. 2 Tyler Mitchell and Eric Waldrop (6-1, 6-3 over Noah Hansen and Travis Williams), and No. 3 Wesley Goodrich and Caleb Dietlin (6-2, 6-2 over Eddy Briseno and Watson).

The Lady Lions tacked on two doubles wins earned by No. 2 Madeleine Goff and Ashlyn Bundick (6-4, 6-4 over Rose Cordes and Laura Haynes) and No. 3 Claire Meinecke and Lyric Shaw (6-0, 6-3 over Grace Taylor and Reagan).

The mixed doubles victory also belonged to Brownwood, captured by Eric Smith and Ihana Figueroa (7-5, 6-3 over Gabe Cortez and Jaci Smith).

In singles competition, Lions collecting victories were No. 1 Prado (6-1, 6-0 over Gabe Cortez), No. 2 Mitchell (6-5, 6-4 over Elijah Cortez), No. 4 Smith (6-2, 6-1 over Post), and No. 6 Goodrich (6-0, 6-1 over Williams).

Picking up singles triumphs for the Lady Lions were No. 2 Raylei Hickey (3-6, 6-3, 10-4 over Alli Foster), No. 3 Goff (by default), and No. 4 Bundick (6-2, 6-1 over Taylor).
