Downtown Brownwood has a new, homemade ice cream shop. “Over the Rainbow Ice Cream” opened last weekend, and sold out of most all of their flavors in their first go.
Over the Rainbow Ice Cream is owned by Julie McDermed, who has lived in the Brownwood area for about nine years. “I wanted to have a business of my own, I wasn’t sure what, but I love ice cream and I always wanted a hand-dipped ice cream shop in Brownwood. So I figured, why not do it myself?”
They offer up to twelve flavors at a time. Some flavors will always be offered, but two or three will rotate in and out for variety. “Everything is made from scratch, no dairy mix, everything is poured and made by hand. Everything added in is made from scratch right here in the shop,” said McDermed. The current flavors are: Chocolate, Rocky Road, Butter Pecan, Snickerdoodle, Coffee, Milk and Cookies, Mint Chip, Cookies and Cream, Strawberry Sorbet, Sweet Cream, and Brownies-a-la-mode. The Strawberry Sorbet is dairy free, and McDermed plans to add a sugar-free ice cream soon.
McDermed has two children, a son Rowan, who is a Sophomore at Early High School, and a daughter Brinley, who is in Early Middle School. This fall Brinley will perform in Howard Payne University’s production of “The Sound of Music,” playing the part of Marta.
Over The Rainbow Ice Cream is open Friday and Saturday 12:00 noon until 9:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The shop is located at 201 Fisk, across the intersection from Teddy’s Brewhaus.
