The Heart of Texas Quilt Show, hosted by the Brownwood Quilters Guild, makes its return to the Brownwood Coliseum Sept. 9-10. Admission is $5 for the event that will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Angela McCorkle, Sherri Marshall, and Connie Hart stopped by KOXE for a Thursday morning interview, and the trio stated those who attend the event will be allowed to select the winners in a variety of categories.

“It’s a viewer’s choice show,” McCorkle said. “Check a ballot, pick your favorite quilt in each category and your favorite quilt overall. Then fill out your name on the ballot and if you fill in every blank your name is entered into a drawing for a goodie basket, which is valued at about $200 to $250.”

The event will also feature its first Quilt of Valor presentation at 3 p.m. Saturday

“It’s very emotional, very moving, and we do want to honor those who have given of themselves in that way,” Hart said. “A lot of love and time have gone into these quilts. That’s special and we want to show how special they are to us.”

There will also be an “old fashion bed turning” that will take place each day at 11:30 a.m.

The bed turning will consist of “quilts not hanging in the shows as entries, on a bed, presented by a group of ladies who have a short story about each of the quilts,” Marshall said.” There will be antiques and new ones as well, and Joy Ivy will present.”

Thus far, 115 quilts have been entered from Brown and surrounding counties. Mostly of the entries are from Brownwood Quilting Guilde members, but some have been submitted from the Austin, Abilene, and Midland areas.

There will a few new awards this year, including the Mayor’s Choice from Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes and Early Mayor Bob Mangrum, along with the Howard Payne President’s Award, selected by Dr. Cory Hines.

The lobby will feature a special memorial to former Brownwood Quilt Guild member Millie Schwab, who passed away earlier this year.

“Millie was a phenomenal quilter, her work is fabulous, and I marveled at everything she ever brought to the guild,” Hart. “We’re fortunate enough to have several of her quilts to show and it will bring back sweet memories of her.”

Also, Shaula Patton of Feathered Star in Clyde will be on site offering demonstrations for Creative Guide Rulers each day at 1 p.m.

Door prizes will be available from a variety of vendors and distributors throughout the weekend. A donation quilt will also be given away near the end of the event, with tickets costing $1 a piece or six for $5.

The Brownwood Quilters Guild meets the third Tuesday each month at 9:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 2411 Coggin Avenue, Brownwood.
