Gladys C. (Yankee) Sutton, age 98, passed away on July 18, 2022.

Gladys was born in Birmingham, AL to William Morris Corns and Mary Gladys Rogers Corns. Gladys married A.I. Sutton on June 3, 1943, in San Saba, Texas.

She participated in Birmingham youth sports, especially softball; she and her teammates qualified for the World Tournament. After high school graduation, she assembled control panels for trainer aircraft during WWII. In the late 1960s, Yankee and A.I. established 4-Corners Gift Shop in downtown Brownwood. Yankee got great joy from serving her customers for many years. She was a member of St. John’s Church, where she served as Director of the Altar Guild, President of Women of the Church, and as a volunteer with the Food Pantry. In addition, Yankee had a lifelong interest in nature, gardening, traveling, art, and home decor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, her husband, and their son, Gary Sutton.

She is survived by her daughter Sandy Sargent and husband Mickey of Brownwood, son Scott Sutton and wife Rita of Mason, and daughter Leigh Anne Sutton of Andrews. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Albany Siam (Dan), Angela Ontiveros (Joe), Kyle Sargent (Kristi), Jim Sutton (Kelcee Ribble), Wes Sutton, and Jessica Sutton-Williams (Calvin). Other survivors include 12 great grandchildren, and 5 great- great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the medical personnel and staff members at both Oak Ridge Manor Nursing Home and Solaris Hospice Services.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday July 29th, 2022, at St. John’s Anglican Church in Brownwood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts in honor of Yankee be made to St. John’s Anglican Church.
