Brownwood’s Tessa Goodwin converted a traditional three-point play with 7:52 left in the contest, staking the South All-Stars to a lead they would not relinquish in a 49-46 victory over the North Saturday at Warren Gym in the Big County FCA All-Star Festival Girls Basketball Game.

Trailing 45-44 with just under eight minutes left, Goodwin drove the lane, was fouled, converted the bucket, and tacked on the free throw. Just three points were scored the remainder of the contest as the South – which trailed at the end of each of the first three quarters – held on, erasing what at one juncture was an eight-point deficit.

The South’s Claire Graham, from Jim Ned, finished as the game MVP as she was the only player to reach double figures, tallying 15 points.

Goodwin chipped in six points and three rebounds, while other Brown County players on the squad included May’s Brianna Steele, who finished with two points and a pair of rebounds; Bangs’ Maggie Morales who sank a free throw and grabbed four rebounds; and Brownwood’s Kynslee Walker, who yanked down four rebounds and dished out an assist.

Other players to score for the South included San Angelo Central’s Deandra Allen with five points; Mason’s Tristen Keller and Robert Lee’s Braylee Hood with four points each; Goldthwaite’s Maggie Tupin and Sterling City’s Kate Barnes with three points apiece; and San Saba’s Landri Glover, Mason’s Lauren Olsen, and Abilene Wylie’s Kenyah Maroney with two points each.

The North – which led 12-8 after one quarter, 30-25 at halftime and 41-38 through three frames – received eight points from Merkel’s Alyssa O’Malley; seven from Huckabay’s Alana Burney; six from Huckabay’s Tiffany Meador; five each from Coahoma’s Katelyn Johnson and Rule’s Macy Rogers; four apiece from Eastland’s Kynnley Harrington and Eula’s Madison Stawarczik; three from Anson’s Reagan Jones; and two points apiece from Tolar’s Balli Deaver and Stamford’s Aubrey Brewer.
