May’s three state qualifiers each earn a bronze medal

AUSTIN – May High School’s contingent at the UIL Class A Track and Field State Championships brought home a trio of bronze medals Saturday as sophomore Amanda Harrell and seniors Avery Williford and Kaden Halk each placed third in their respective events.

First Saturday morning at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, Harrell hurled the discus 123.5 to land on the medal stand. Harrell, the Region II-A champion, actually finished tied for second place with Region II-A runner-up Payton Conner of Sterling City, but Conner took the silver medal on a tiebreaker.

Harrell captured the regional title with an effort of 110 feet, which ranked fourth among qualifying efforts for those in the state field. Harrell’s best throw Saturday came on the fifth of her six attempts.

La Sara sophomore Xiomara Rodriguez won the state championship with an effort of 127-6.

Williford, the Region II-A runner-up in the boys discus, placed third overall in Austin with a best effort of 143-6 on his final attempt Saturday afternoon. Williford posted a 135-4 regional effort, which ranked third among state qualifiers.

Cherokee’s Joseph Bond (170-10) won the state title followed by silver medalist Brody White of Benjamin (152-9)

Williford edged out Gunnar Bowles of Turkey Valley (142-8) for the bronze.

Saturday evening, Halk came in third in the boys 100 meters in a time of 11.07. Halk finished behind state champion LaTavion Mays of Burkeville (10.95) and Jordan Daniel of Rotan (11.05).

Halk, the Region II-A champion, was tied for the fifth-best regional time among state qualifiers as he posted an 11.23 to advance.

Two more Brown County student-athletes also took part in state action Saturday.

In the Class A girls shot put, Brookesmith junior Elida Uvalle finished seventh with a best effort of 33-4, coming on the last of her six attempts.

Uvalle was tied for the eighth-best regional performance among state qualifiers entering the meet.

Nordheim’s Emgen Styra (39-10) captured the state championship trailed by silver medalist Ashlyn Hall of Paint Rock (38-8.25) and bronze medalist Neihmaya Howard of Klondike (36-4.75).

In the Class A boys long jump, Zephyr’s Jayden Millican placed ninth Saturday morning with a distance of 19-2, which came on the fifth of his six leaps.

Millican entered the state meet with the ninth-best regional performance among the state qualifiers.

Wildorado’s Dustin Bryant (22-2.5) won the state championship followed by silver medalist Jaime Mendoza of San Isidro (22-0.75) and bronze medalist Cason Allen of Cross Plains (21-0.25).
